A coalition of federal employees is intensifying their efforts to secure broader fertility benefits under the government’s health insurance program. The Department of Justice Gender Equality Network (DOJ GEN) has formally petitioned the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) to enhance its requirements for health insurers to cover in-vitro fertilization (IVF) procedures. While OPM currently mandates that insurers cover certain IVF medications, DOJ GEN is now advocating for a policy change that would extend coverage to include both IVF medications and treatments starting in the 2025 plan year.
This push comes as numerous DOJ employees have shared their personal stories, highlighting the significant financial and emotional challenges they have endured due to the lack of comprehensive IVF coverage. The employees argue that expanding coverage is essential for addressing these difficulties and ensuring equitable access to fertility treatments.
